Hi wellness enthusiasts,

Last weekend, we went over to the Bedok Community Library for another session on “Healthy Eating, Live Healthy” free talk. We shared some information on food labellings, basic information on Magic 7 and simple recipes they can try at home.

We brought along a few slices of homemade wholemeal bread with tuna spread and the refreshing honeygar drink for the crowd. It got whipped up in a few minutes! Our mango and banana smoothie was a favourite with the crowd too. Other than that, we showed them the simple method of baking your own wholemeal bread at home! Imagine having fresh bread at home in less than 2 hours! Delightful!

Here are some pictures for memories:

I had my first child last year in 2008. From my pre-pregnancy weight of 56kg, I went all the way up to 70kg. 70kg was after my baby was out of the tummy!

I tried many ways but I have always stayed away from diet pills or meal replacements. Mostly, I took care of my food intake and exercise. However, the result was too slow for me. In 6 months, I managed to drop about 4kg.

That was when I decided to upgrade my knowledge about nutrition and signed up for classes. The nutrition and weight loss programmes have taught me how to eat according to my weight and body needs.

After going through nutrition lessons, I managed to go back to my pre-pregnancy weight of 55kg in about 3 months. That is about 10kg off my weight.

The rules are simple:
1. Eat small frequent meals – every 3 or 4 hours. Have more food with fibre such as salads, fruits and wholemeal bread to keep you full.
2. You have to exercise. No short cuts around it. Find an activity that you enjoy doing.

I am currently 5 months pregnant with my second child but my weight has stayed stable, unlike the first one. This is because I know what is necessary and good for both the baby and me. Less weight gained during pregnancy means less weight to lose post-pregnancy!

Gout and Nutrition

Posted in Food, Health, Men, Nutrition, Weight Loss tagged , , , , , at 10:55 am by 7ive7ife

Hi wellness enthusiasts,

Last weekend, I attended my ex-colleague’s wedding at Tampines. It was nice to finally see him married. I have only known him for 3 years or so but well enough to wish him all the best in marriage life! Hope to see him with kids in tow soon!

Like most of us, weddings can sometimes be a weekly affair with so many invitations to attend to. At times, we can even have 3 or 4 weddings in one weekend. That means, we have 4 buffet spread to “pay homage” to!

A quick tip to all readers today: Eat your salads, fruits and drink water first before you hit the heavier food items such as the rice, rendang or chicken. Eating food with a lot of fibre will keep you full. Thus, reduce your intake of heavier carbohydrates such as your rice and main dishes.

However, today’s entry, as you can see from its title, will be about Gout. I dedicate this entry to my newly-wedded friend, Mr Alfie. Alfie is a young man in his very early 30s. He is active and his work requires him to use most of his energy. He keeps a busy lifestyle by going out after working hours and still makes time for school. He weight is of an acceptable range. In summary, he is young, active, does not have over-weight issues and he has frequent gout attacks.

Why? Gout does not only attack the elderly. Gout is a type of arthritis caused by uric acid builds up and forms crystals which are deposited inside the joints. It is a joint condition. If left untreated, an acute attack will subside in a week or two, but in most cases, gout will reappear. Both genetic and environmental factors influence the incidence of gout.

Gout happens when there is an excessive intake of “rich food” such as dried mushrooms, tuna, animal organs such as liver, kidney, heart, brains and soy bean related products etc.

Suitable nutrition for “gout-ers”, would be to drink plenty of water to wash away the uric acid from your body and eat less high purine foods (in moderation) such as:

1. Small fish, ikan bilis, fish roe

2. Meat extracts and stock cubes

3. Seafood like crab, cockles, prawns, scallops

4. Asparagus, spinach

5. Soya bean products such as tofu, beancurd, tempeh

6. Wholegrain breads and cereals

Remember, the key is MODERATION and VARIETY- just as in weight-loss.

If you are planning to lose weight, you have to avoid a high protein diet as it may trigger or aggravate a gout attack. As such, always consult your nutritionist and it is important to let he/she know about your condition. Currently, our weight loss programme as you can read from

here

states that the client takes a lot of food high in protein during the detoxification period. Clients with gout occurrence will be given different meal plans to help them achieve the same results without having to go through any possible attacks. Your personal nutritionist is your best pal and help-line during weight loss. They will see you through your struggle and doubt in the process. This is why shows like Biggest Loser has personal trainers and nutritionists with them.

In addition, do simple movements to prevent stiffness when you feel better.

I do hope that my friend, Alfie, will have less gout attacks now that he has someone to care for him and look after his diet. Selamat Pengantin Baru!

What the consultant has to say…

Posted in Men, News, Weight Loss tagged , , at 10:06 pm by 7ive7ife

Hi wellness enthusiasts,

How is our client doing? His consultant’s verdict?

Excerpts:

It is the third day of the detoxification process for him and it has been good so far. Initially, I was worried that he might not be able to pull through the process. As the days go by, it seems like he is here to stay through. I believe that 10% of any weight-loss efforts is the mechanics – the know-hows and methods. 90% of it comes a lot from the person in question.

More: I suppose…

I Hate Being FAT!

Posted in Event, News, Weight Loss, Women tagged , , at 1:46 pm by 7ive7ife

Article Source from Mdm Suria Mohd, Anggun International Director and Nutritionist:

One of the biggest reason why someone grows bigger and bigger in size is because guess what… because they ask for it!!!

HUH!! Hey wait, what do you mean, ask for it, no one wants or likes to be overweight or fat, how can they be asking for it??

Alright, alright, before you get your boxing gloves to engage in a wrestle with me for such bold statement, let me grab some ice to cool off the steam : )

Ready now? : )

You see, one of the main enemies of losing weight is call Mr Victim. We play the roles of Mr Victim in some time or other in our life…coz the ego always want to put it on someone else but our own selves…

It’s my mum’s fault, she cooks food that makes me fat, it’s m husband’s fault he make me eat with him every night, its my exam’s fault, my exams make me fatter by the day, it’s my boyfriend’s fault, he makes me angry and therefore I eat…

It’s the moon, stars, the neighbour’s cat and everything and everyone else but ,,,, good ole me. No one escapes that coz its the ego’s function to always be right…

So for the sake of this article, give some holiday ticket to your ego and let your ego take a mini break while you can read this in peace minus the mental war..

One of the greatest miracle of the mind is that whatever we focus on expands or become more.. .so complaining of our fats, how we hate our body, how we hate so and so, how we hate our job, etc etc etc… will create more of  _________?

Answer: You guessed it right if you say, more of whatever you complain about…

Complaining is about focusing on what is right or wrong about/in our life? Duh…

Its about anything but perfect… its about why things should have could have would have been better if….

So naturally lo and behold, whatever if we are complaining then we are stating whatever is going on wrong with our life, and whatever we hate, so we end up getting more of what we hate.

Our mind and body becomes like a giant magnet that will attract more of whatever it is complaining or hate about, thus creating a vicious downward spiral to doom land.

So hating and complaining about how ugly our cellulite looks and how much we hate to be fat, will make the fats hang on more to your dear body. You want to be slim yet you’re saying to your mental box that you hate to be fat, so you will attract people and occasions in your life that will make you end up bigger.

Any hopes out?

Of course! Here’s the light at the end of the tunnel…

1. Start focusing on what you want and like than what you dont want and dislike, be it people or circumstances, or your own current state of body. Example… I hate being fat, replace with … I love being ___________________

And the best tool to help you at this point is you dear imagination… the most powerful overlooked tool… Can’t see yourself slim? Then activate the imagination, turn on that mental movie and actually see yourself in your plasma TV up there, wearing your size S clothes, hear the voices praising you..

Still can’t see anything? Then go cut a picture of Angelina Jolie’s body and paste your face up there, woala!!! you instantly see yourself slim!

I can write a whole 101 action list of what to do, but in a nutshell…

See slim, Say slim, and Think Slim …. do it for the next 21 days and you’ll see your fats melting off your body far more easily than ever before… : )

Till then, Think Slim & Be Slim!

Suria

Your body sends signals

Posted in Food, Health, Nutrition, Weight Loss tagged , , , , at 11:27 am by 7ive7ife

Hi wellness enthusiasts,

Last weekend, we had a successful run of the “once-in-a-lifetime” workshop for some of our readers who made some time out of their busy Hari Raya. From their positive faces, we know they left gaining valuable information and knowledge on the “7 Weight Loss Miracles” to help them lose the extra weight.

For those who could not make it, no worries! Here are some information that we shared for the benefit of every reader.

Do you know that your body is a smart machine? Imagine your body as your car. Every six months or so, you would have to send it to the workshop for maintenance and fuel has to be topped-up ever so often, especially when the car is used more frequently. When the red light comes on for the fuel, we quickly look for a petrol kiosk to top up the fuel. Most car owners will also take it upon themselves to take care of the interior look so that the car is clean and smells fresh all the time.

If you take so much time out for your car, how about your own body? Our body too has red lights to signal its needs. Have you ever heard your stomach grumble? This happens especially when you skip meals in the office and while at work.

In our workshops, we constantly remind clients to take their breakfast and meals at 3-4 hours interval. The idea is not to have the body give you the red light signals. By then, it might be too late. What is the rationale for this?

Just like a car, your body needs energy to run daily activities such as walking, typing, talking, running, thinking, driving and the list goes on and on. Our fuel is our food. Every 3-4 hours, you should take a pit stop at the filling machine and fill it up with fuel. Without food, our body fails to run properly and might contribute to you feeling lethargic and lack of concentration during those meetings.

One of the main food groups, according to the Singapore Healthy Diet Pyramid, is carbohydrates. Today, we shall just cover on carbohydrates. Carbohydrates is important as your basic fuel supply, energy balance for your liver and acts as an emergency fuel for your heart when fatty acids are no longer available.

Fresh fruits and vegetables

You have 2 types which are complex carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates comes from food sources such as bread, sweet potatoes and cereals. Simple carbohydrates are your cakes, ice cream, sugar and drinks. In your quest to lead a healthy lifestyle, you should always strive for a balance with all kinds of food.

Some good examples of starchy but low-fat food are rice, noodles, pasta, bread, cereal or cereal bars, chapati, naan, thosai, fruits, milk, yoghurt, potato, yam and corn. Do take note to consume these food with less oil, butter, low in fat and boiled and steamed instead of fried. For sweet, low-fat carbohydrate food, we have sugar, honey, syrup, sports drinks, lollies and sweets.

You should try to cut down or avoid high-fat food such as pastries, chocolates, ice-creams, puddings, chips, cream biscuits and cakes. When you consume high-fat food, the body takes a longer time to digest them and without the proper nutrients, your body will not be able to function well.

Do take note that 50-60% of your total daily energy requirements come from carbohydrates and there should be a combination of simple and complex carbohydrates in one meal. For example, you can take oats in the morning with a small amount of sugar.

Some might ask about artificial sweeteners. They do not provide you with any energy because artificial sweeteners has negligible or zero calories. They are highly recommended for diabetics and weight loss clients because it makes the food sweet without the guilt of extra calories. Most artificial sweeteners are made up of chemicals instead of the usual carbohydrates and thus are 200 time sweeter than normal sugar.

Make smart choices when you eat and always think of VMB. Variety, Moderation and Balanced.

Live life Smartly!
